Have you heard of the Lionsgate Portal — starting early July, and said to peak on August 8th when the brightest star after the Sun, Sirius a-rises in Leo?

That story comes from the Northern Hemisphere’s tropical calendar, not from the real night sky, and Māori cosmology.

Let’s set the record straight. Here in Aotearoa, Sirius rises in July, mid-winter. She is known to us as Hinetakurua, the Winter Maiden — not a roaring summer lion, but a divine peaceful atua who takes our true star, The Sun, Tamanuiterā, to bed so he can rest through the cold season.  We can all take a stillness leaf from this sacred kete (knowledge basket).

❄️ Southern Stargate Wisdom

  • Sirius doesn’t rise in Leo sidereally — she's actually aligned with Gemini (and the Southern guiding star Puaka or Rige) if you look up at the real dawn sky.

  • The “Lionsgate” is based on tropical astrology, which is seasonal, not star-centred.

  • Māori pūrākau (stories) follow what is seen — working with heliacal or sun risings, the maramataka, and whakapapa, not mainstream astrology.
